Motherlode Series
CURATED BY KYUNGSHIL CHOI 4 April - May 2025
Ryan Art Gallery is pleased to present The Motherlode Series by ANDRÉE B. CARTER, a body of work that bridges the realms of fine art and craft through an innovative fusion of needlepoint and painting. Conceived during an artist residency at the historic Castle of Otranto in Italy, the series draws inspiration from the castle’s cast shadows, which the artist translated into bold, dynamic forms. Known for her experimental approach, the artist improvises color using handmade pigments—crafted from dry pigment, gesso, and marble dust—imbuing each piece with a distinct material depth. The Motherlode Series marks a pivotal moment in her practice, as it is the first time she has combined two core elements: custom-mixed pigments and needlepoint embedded directly into the canvas. This union honors traditional women’s craft while simultaneously questioning the long-standing divisions between fine art and applied art, giving each equal voice within a single, powerful composition.
Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, April 4th, from 12 to 2 PM
