Little Universes within Summer
CURATED BY KYUNGSHIL CHOI 11 July - 16 August 2025
Ryan Art Gallery is delighted to present Little Universes within Summer, a group exhibition featuring works by Andrée B. Carter, Christine Ferrouge, Emily Wallerstein, Jungran Park, Ryan Kim, Youn Youngkyung, and Oh Yongkill. Each artist brings forth a distinct visual language, together forming a constellation of artistic worlds that coexist within a single space. The exhibition’s title reflects this harmony of multiplicity—within the warmth and openness of summer, countless inner worlds unfold, each brimming with its own light, rhythm, and emotion.
Across painting, textile, and mixed media, the artists explore themes of place, perception, and transformation. Carter’s tactile fusion of needlepoint and pigment bridges fine art and craft, while Ferrouge’s evocative figures navigate the complexities of identity and memory. Wallerstein’s luminous landscapes trace the poetics of California’s shifting terrains, and Park’s layered compositions weave childhood play into the lineage of Korean patchwork. Kim’s vibrant floral abstractions pulse with the raw energy of life and color, Youngkyung’s natural-dye works breathe with the living essence of Hanji, and Oh Yongkill’s contemplative ink paintings reinterpret the spirit of traditional Korean landscape with a contemporary sensibility.
Together, these artists create a dialogue between tradition and modernity, restraint and exuberance, solitude and connection. Little Universes within Summer invites viewers to wander through these varied worlds—each a reflection of its maker’s vision, yet all resonating within the shared season of creation. Through their coexistence, the exhibition reveals the quiet truth that within every artist, and every summer, countless universes bloom.
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, July 11th, from 12 to 2 PM
